The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has chosen the reputable firm, ‘Causeway One.Network’ to implement a statewide software system that will make work zones safer and make managing traffic easier. The deal will help UDOT use Live Link and Traffic Management, two digital tools that will make it easier for people on Utah’s roads to communicate with each other in real-time.
Live Link lets authorized crews use a mobile app to send information from the field in real-time. These updates are sent immediately to navigation apps like Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze systems in commercial vehicles. This helps drivers avoid sudden slowdowns and keeps the roads safer.
“The best way to keep people safe and keep traffic moving is to let people know about roadblocks fast and clearly,” says Paul Madeira, Chief International Growth Officer at Causeway Technologies.
With the companion Traffic Management platform, UDOT and contractors can use a single system to plan detours, planned road closures, and reactions to incidents. This cuts down on the problems and delays that come up when emergency or construction work happens at the same time.
This is the second statewide rollout of Causeway One.Network in the U.S. The first was in Florida, where the platform was used to successfully close over 50,000 roads.
The new platform is supposed to be very important for supporting UDOT’s long-term traffic safety plans, such as its Zero Fatalities initiative. It is a public campaign to end traffic deaths through engineering, education, enforcement, and emergency response.
The new rollout is in line with UDOT’s larger goal of improving infrastructure. The agency just got $6.25 million to grow digital construction and asset management tools. This includes $5 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
It is also part of UDOT’s Digital Delivery Initiative, which aims to move construction projects from using paper design plans to using only digital workflows. The goal is to get agencies, contractors and field teams to work together better, be more accurate, and spend less.
UDOT isn’t the only one going digital. Smart tools are being used by agencies all over the country to make them more efficient. In order to improve planning and track assets better, Illinois DOT has launched a GIS-based digital map system and Caltrans is testing digital twins to model road projects in real-time.
The office in Utah has also stressed getting people involved. UDOT put out behind-the-scenes bodycam video in April 2025 to bring attention to National Work Zone Awareness Week and the dangers that workers in these areas face.
People who work in the industry say that UDOT’s use of One.Network is part of a growing trend in transportation to bring safety technology straight into construction work. As we move forward, real-time data is becoming just as important for building infrastructure that meets the needs of modern transport as asphalt and concrete.
UDOT is still the leader in putting safety-focused digital construction tools into use by choosing Causeway One.Network’s platform, has taken another step towards building a smarter, safer transportation network.
