From billion-dollar highway projects to high-speed rail lines, America is in the midst of a once-in-a-generation infrastructure boom. 

Driven by state-level investment and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, a variety of projects are transforming the ways that Americans travel, how goods are delivered and the manner inwhich  cities policymakers plan for the future.

Here are ten of the most ambitious projects in the works for the United States, based on recent lists presented by The Indian Express and Blackridge Research reports.

1. Gateway Program - New York and New Jersey

A multibillion-dollar project to rebuild and enlarge rail tunnels beneath the Hudson River, the Gateway Program is essential for Northeast Corridor commuter and freight service.

2. California High-Speed Rail

The project, which eventually stretches from Los Angeles to San Francisco, stands as the largest rail infrastructure project in the country, despite experiencing significant delays.

3. Brent Spence Bridge Corridor - Kentucky and Ohio

The massive bridge and highway corridor project will take pressure off one of America’s busiest freight and passenger routes.

4. I-35 Northeast Expansion - Texas

A previous report stated that Balfour Beatty won an $889 million deal to be in charge of some of this enormous Texas highway improvement. The project crosses many countries and will alleviate congestion and freight jams.

5. Long Bridge Expansion - Washington, D.C. and Virginia

The $2.3 billion rail expansion project will double rail capacity for passengers between Virginia and D.C., cutting commuter time and boosting Amtrak service.

6. Gordie Howe International Bridge - Canada and Michigan

A large-scale international crossing project, the Gordie Howe Bridge will enhance trade and logistics on the U.S.-Canada border.

7. Chicago O’Hare Terminal Expansion - Illinois

This project will update one of America's busiest airports with a multibillion-dollar budget to add gates, enlarge terminals, and improve passenger movement.

8. Coastal Texas Protection and Restoration Project

Also referred to as the "Ike Dike," it is an environmental megaproject that would safeguard Texas's Gulf Coast from sea-level rise and storm surges.

9. Port of Long Beach On-Dock Rail Support Facility – California

The significant freight rail expansion is one of the efforts of California to decrease emissions and enhance port logistics efficiency.

10. Hudson Yards Development - New York

While formally private-sector initiated, this multi-phase mixed-use development consists of infrastructure, transit, and public facilities re-designing Manhattan's West Side.

These initiatives depict an increasing focus on advancing and future-proofing America's antiquated infrastructure. They cut across transportation, climate resilience, logistics and urban revitalization. Meanwhile, there are problems. 

Labor shortages, congestion in the supply chain, and weather-related natural disasters like hurricanes have affected timelines and budgets nationwide. Escalating material prices and overly complicated permitting procedures also continue to challenge public agencies and contractors alike.

Nevertheless, the size and scope of these projects mark a watershed era for American infrastructure. The coming decade is poised to usher in a sweeping transformation to the country's transportation and development landscape, with billions of federal dollars pouring in and additional projects under development.
