In a move to consolidate state efforts to combat poverty and expand economic opportunities, the Maryland General Assembly is considering a bill. It aims to establish a new Department of Social and Economic Mobility. House Bill 1253 proposes the creation of this department to streamline programs focused on workforce and community development.

This consolidation is intended to create a more coordinated and efficient approach to addressing complex social and economic challenges within the state.

The bill, available on the Maryland General Assembly website, outlines the new department’s responsibilities. It would be responsible for coordinating strategies and resources. These initiatives would enhance the economic situation for Maryland's people. Details, including the bill’s fiscal note, are also accessible on the website. Job training, affordable housing and educational access are among the primary target areas.

This legislative initiative expands Maryland’s existing efforts to promote equitable economic growth. The state has already made efforts to increase participation in Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) programs and implement procurement reforms for DBEs, MBEs, SBRs and VSBEs

These previous efforts show a commitment to making a more equitable economy. The new department would provide a more unified framework for this and comparable projects. It may also encourage newer efforts and partnerships to boost social and economic mobility in the state.
