A new certification initiative, “Certify Colorado,” will help small businesses across the state break down barriers by assisting them in covering the cost of obtaining nationally recognized certification for acquiring corporate and government contracts.
This initiative was led by the Minority Business Office (MBO) and was announced to the public by Governor Jared Polis and the Business Support Division within the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT).
Upfront certification fees can range from $250 to $5,000. This estimate includes the annual recertification costs based on gross revenue. The Certify Colorado program will provide up to $2,000 per business for certification fees.
The Economic Development Commission (EDC) has approved $250,000 in funding to be allocated to businesses on a first-come, first-served basis. To be eligible for this assistance, participating businesses must complete the Certification 101 course and have a viable business plan with a strategic plan for entering the government/corporate contracting space. The business must also prove that the availability of program funds and certifier capacity.
Denver Economic Development & Opportunity (DEDO) and the Women’s Business Enterprise Council-West (WBEC-West) are the first two participating certifiers who will help implement this program.
Governor Polis explained the program’s benefit, stating, “By breaking down cost barriers, we can support small businesses and make government more efficient.” He further stated, “Small businesses strengthen our economy, create good-paying jobs, and drive innovation.”
Certifications play a key role in helping a business achieve visibility, credibility, and eligibility for public- and private-sector contracts.
