Fluor Corporation has landed a $671 million contract from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to upgrade a key stretch of highway in College Station. This project will renovate and widen a 12-mile section of State Highway 6, a crucial route through the rapidly growing Brazos Valley.

Construction is set to begin in summer 2025, with completion targeted for spring 2030, according to Fluor. Construction will roll out in multiple phases - starting from preliminary utility relocations and earthwork along the northern section.

Plans include widening the road from four to six lanes and extending collector-distributor lanes at major access points to ease congestion and reduce risky merging. The upgrade will also add shared-use paths for cyclists and pedestrians, promoting safer, multimodal travel along the corridor.

According to TxDOT, this project aims to address the rising traffic congestion and enhance safety in the College Station area, which is home to Texas A&M University and is one of the fastest-growing cities in the state. Fluor said the improved route will support both freight haulers and local traffic, calling it a key investment in the region’s infrastructure.

The company’s selection reflects its growth in Texas infrastructure projects. Fluor is leading the $700 million expansion of Interstate 35 in San Antonio, which began in 2024 and is expected to be completed by 2028. This project aims to increase capacity and reduce congestion on one of the busiest highways in the state.

Earlier this year, Contractor News reported on the I-35 project, emphasizing its importance for supporting urban growth in San Antonio and improving logistics for commercial transportation.

The company said the project reflects its growing footprint in large-scale transportation work across Texas. The company noted that its ability to manage long-term, complex highway projects positions it well to support TxDOT’s evolving priorities.

This project is part of a broader wave of highway investments fueled by federal infrastructure funding. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act has allocated billions of dollars for the modernisation of roads and bridges throughout the United States. With the approval of the State Highway 6 project, construction firms and local officials are now gearing up for a multi-year construction effort.

Texas has seen a steady surge in roadwork projects in recent years, largely backed by federal infrastructure dollars. State officials say that these investments are crucial for assisting economic progress and keeping pace with the demands of a growing population.
