The Port of Oakland recently organized an event to bring together local DBEs (Disadvantage Business Enterprise) with established corporations associated with the Port of Oakland projects. The DBE program is a federal small business designation from the USDOT.
The Port of Oakland aims to include 12.42?Es in federally sponsored projects. The purpose of the DBE workshop and networking event is to expand the number of DBE-certified contractors that work as subcontractors on Port projects.
Before the contract networking event, the Port organized a workshop on the DBE certification process. It is essential for small companies willing to work as subcontractors on large infrastructure projects undertaken by the Port of Oakland.
According to Amy Tharpe, Director of Social Responsibility, Port of Oakland, local, small businesses must have the chance to compete for multi-million dollar contracts. She added, " Small, local businesses are the backbone of our community and are integral to local hiring and the economic health of the area."
Four prime contractors, KYA, Swinerton, Turner, and Webcor, participated in the event and highlighted their forthcoming projects.
Kimberly Wilson, Contract Compliance Supervisor of the Port of Oakland, said, "This is an opportunity for subcontractors to meet and develop a meaningful relationship with the Port's prime contractors." She added that these productive networking events are crucial and have developed into a routine step.
