The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (NJDOL) has announced nearly $1.9 million in grant funding to support training programs aimed at preparing women and minorities for careers in the construction trades.

The funding, provided through the New Jersey Builders Utilization Initiative for Labor Diversity (NJBUILD), will help train 140 workers in fields such as general construction, HVAC, and plumbing pre-apprenticeships.

Four organizations have been awarded grants in Round 1 of FY25, with Pathways to Apprenticeship NJ receiving $600,000, followed by the Elizabeth Development Company with $537,280, the Eastern Atlantic States Carpenters Technical Center with $351,780, and the East Orange School District with $443,464.

“NJBUILD grants are critical investments in the future of New Jersey women and minorities who want to build a career in the construction trades,” said Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo. “These funds will empower them with the skills and opportunities needed to not just open doors in this industry but to succeed.”

NJBUILD focuses on pre-apprenticeship, registered apprenticeship, and on-the-job training to help participants gain the skills needed to enter union apprenticeships or construction jobs.

The program also supports public works contractors, businesses, and trade unions by helping them meet workforce needs.

With over $73 million invested in training programs over the past six years, New Jersey continues its commitment to expanding opportunities and creating a more diverse and inclusive workforce in the construction industry.
