Skanska and FlatironDragados have also been awarded a contract of an additional $445 million contract to undertake improvement works on the roadways of the Los Angeles International Airport.
The group’s contract is a continuation of the Airfield and Terminal Modernization Program at LAX and contributes to an aggregate contract value of approximately $868 million to Skanska following the signing of the initial contract of a value of $323 million in 2025.
Under the new package, the team will reconfigure more than 6 kilometers - about 4 miles of airport roadways, build and alter bridges, and upgrade traffic signals while deploying advanced traffic monitoring systems.
The objective is to improve access to terminals, help reduce congestion, and enhance safety without affecting the airport's current footprint. LAWA officials say these improvements are crucial as LAX readies for increased passengers associated with the 2028 Summer Olympics and increased long-term demand in air travel.
The additional work adds to "the original joint venture’s work, which includes 4.4 miles of replaced and reconfigured roadway on Sepulveda Boulevard to separate local traffic from traffic headed to the airport," according to a report.
The two contracts are a "critical element of a $30 billion program to improve LAX, a comprehensive effort that also includes terminal modernization, people movers, and airfield projects," as explained in the reports. Ground has already been broken on the construction of the roadway, with work set to continue through next year’s fourth quarter, due in part to working around one of America’s busiest airports.
According to the Skanska and Flatiron executives, the project represents a demonstration of “advanced traffic engineering and large-scale phasing around live operations.”
As part of the joint venture agreement, the group is expected to undertake the designs on the roadways, bridges, and sophisticated signals aimed at minimizing the idling times and emissions along the airport curbfronts. In the end, the project is expected to produce predictable road access and way-finding options for the commuters.
Roadway projects of the type of LAX are a part of the current wave of heavy civil capital investment in the United States. In the New York/New Jersey market, for example, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has proposed a $45 billion capital plan that incorporates airports, bridges, tunnels, and transit projects.
These projects offer substantial work for heavy civil contractors in the region. In the industry, it is recognized that projects of this type call attention to the role of a more varied workforce in the industry, including projects related to women in the industry.
