The city of San Antonio is pressing ahead with an extensive $1.7 billion renovation of its international airport, an investment that will stand the test of generations as the airport’s air transport network grows ever further.
The focus of the expansion effort is clearly the new Terminal C, whose probable cost has risen to between $1.5 billion and $1.7 billion, depending on the source, as the designs for the structure have expanded to incorporate more gates, concourses, and even more amenities, as reported in the local press. The expanding population, as well as the demand for air transport services, has driven the efforts to develop the airport infrastructure.
But in addition to the new terminal, the renovation is expected to reshape the way that airfield operations will be utilized by the traveling public as well as air carriers. Local media reports that the renovation will, in fact, examine the addition of new concessions and customer amenities in order to allow the airport to compete effectively with the larger Texas hubs.
The funding for this upgrade will be generated through a combination of airport revenues, bonds, and government funding, including an FAA award announced recently, which will be used for airfield and terminal projects related to the expansion plan.
The overall airport development plan involves gateway enhancements, including increased curbside and road access, as well as infrastructure that would enable future route development and accommodate bigger aircraft, in addition to gate expansions, as well as security, and bag handling projects. The actual construction is expected to accelerate in the coming years.
Major contractors are already mobilized. Hensel Phelps has begun work on the $1.4 billion expansion program at San Antonio International Airport, which encompasses terminal, concourse, and landside elements that will dovetail with the larger $1.7 billion vision. The city's airport push comes as part of other big-ticket infrastructure investments in the region, including Texas DOT's $700 million San Antonio project and a separate $1.5 billion I?35 expansion through the metro area; both are to reduce congestion and improve regional mobility.
It is a broader wave of terminal rebuilds and airside upgrades at US airports, including ongoing work in cities like Pittsburgh, which is seeing the shape and flow of that hub being reshaped through a multi-hundred-million-dollar terminal and airside renovation program.
For contractors, the San Antonio program offers a deep pipeline of vertical and civil work, and for the region, it marks a bid to solidify its position as a competitive gateway for business and leisure travel across Texas and beyond.
