New York State is making significant strides to support minority and women-owned businesses (MWBEs) by simplifying the certification process. Governor Kathy Hochul’s “Sail-Thru Summer” initiative plans to expedite the certification timeline, allowing businesses to focus on growth rather than bureaucratic hurdles.

To achieve this, the state has partnered with local Entrepreneurship Assistance Centers (EACs) and Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs). These organizations will provide free expert guidance to businesses going through the certification process. By offering free hands-on support until August 30th and streamlining the application process, the state aims to reduce certification timelines, potentially to as little as 90 days.

Becoming a certified MWBE can open doors to government contracts, which often lead to increased revenue, job creation, and business expansion. Studies have shown that increased participation of MWBEs in the economy contributes to overall economic growth and vitality.

New York State’s commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive business environment is evident through this initiative. By removing barriers and providing essential support, the state is encouraging MWBEs to compete on a level playing field and contribute to the state’s economic success.

To take advantage of the “Sail-Thru Summer” initiative, businesses are encouraged to contact their local EAC or SBDC as soon as possible. By streamlining the certification process, New York State is investing in the future of its diverse business community.
