Durham County is launching a new program to help minority and women-owned businesses (M/WBEs) win government contracts. The ‘Certify & Succeed’ program provides free advice and coaching to businesses interested in getting certified as MWBEs or Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUBs).

In 2016, Durham County approved a MWBE Ordinance, setting a goal of awarding 25% of its contracts to M/WBEs. The ‘Certify & Succeed’ program will help more local M/WBEs win contracts, bringing the county closer to this goal. A MWBE certification can also help businesses win contracts from other cities, counties, states, and the federal government.

The ‘Certify & Succeed’ program will help businesses:

  • Register for North Carolina’s E-Vendor Portal and Durham County’s eBid System
  • Submit applications to obtain a Statewide Uniform Certification (SWUC), Historically Underutilized Business (HUB) Certification, and/or a Small Business Enterprise (SBE) Certification
  • Build a comprehensive capabilities statement for govt. contracting

“This program is a great addition to the County’s suite of equitable programming focused on underrepresented business owners. The establishment of a technical support network for MWBE and HUB certifications is vital for advancing diversity and fairness in government procurement,” said Sabria Futrell, Durham County Economic Development Coordinator

La-Tasha Best-Gaddy, Chief Strategist at Infinity Bridges, the company partnering with Durham County on this program, said “Infinity Bridges is thrilled to partner with Durham County to support local businesses in achieving their certifications. This collaboration will empower enterprises to reach new heights and contribute to the economic growth of our community.”

The program also offers one-on-one coaching sessions starting now and running through June 2025. Registrations are open here. Appointments are required and can be scheduled at the Durham County Main Library or the East Regional Library.
