The signing of the agreement marks a step forward in the Port Authority’s plan to modernize cargo operation at all of its commercial airports.

“Throughout the pandemic, JFK has shown its importance and resilience as one of the nation’s most in-demand cargo centers,” Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton said, according to QNS. “Governor Cuomo’s Vision Plan for JFK included strong support for cargo as a key piece of the redevelopment, and this project will create jobs, boost the local economy and produce a world-class cargo operation.”

In order to construct the 350,000-square-foot facility, two existing facilities will have to be demolished. The new facility will feature  “advanced technology systems designed for maximum efficiency in the handling and storage of cargo.” Additionally, there will be a temperature-controlled portion for the storage of pharmaceuticals. The need for this kind of facility is all the more apparent given that many coronavirus vaccines have gone bad due to bad temperature controls.

Project managers anticipate that construction will create opportunities for 350 union jobs. Moreover, subcontracting for things like plumbing, mechanical work, electrical work, and other areas will entail contracts for minority and women-owned businesses.

According to QNS, cargo at the airport “supports 73,000 total jobs, $12.5 billion in sales and nearly $4.4 billion in wages.”

“This new cargo facility will create new jobs as well as MWBE and local business contracting opportunities. This work is vital to an equitable recovery for southeast Queens,” said New York representative Gregory Meeks. “As co-chair of the JFK Airport Redevelopment Advisory Council, I’ve seen firsthand the commitment for community inclusion and consideration of neighborhoods directly impacted by these projects.”

Demolition of the old facilities will start in September of this year, while the new facility is expected to be finished in 2023.
