The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) recently announced 17 projects across the Peach State, amounting to $182.2 million. 

The funding is divided up so that 47%  will be allotted to bridge projects, 44% for road resurfacing, and the rest of the funds will be used to enhance road safety.

GDOT has stated that more than 211 projects are slated for 2022, amounting to more than $1.2 billion. The majority of the projects—about 47%—are categorized as maintenance projects.

According to transportation officials, approximately $11.4 million worth of contracts has been given to the Tucker-based firm Georgia Bridge and Concrete, the most expensive project on the list. In Burke County, the contractor will construct two bridges and approaches on State Route 23 over Brier Creek and Brier Creek Overflow.

C.W. Matthews Contracting Co. of Marietta received the second-largest contract for more than $7 million in resurfacing projects in Forsyth County. On Georgia State Route 141, from north of McGinnis Ferry Road to south of State Route 9, more than 6.7 miles of milling, inlay, and plant mix resurfacing are part of the project.

The agency also awarded to CW Matthews Contracting and ICE Consultingapproximately $50 million in design-build funds for a State Route 400 (Georgia 400) project.

The project's first phase "was pulled forward as part of a phased delivery" to add express lanes to the thoroughfare. Per a news report, this was done to use a part of a $184 million U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) INFRA grant.

Three bridges across Pitts Road, Roberts Drive, and Kimball Bridge Road in Fulton County will be replaced and raised as part of the contract to make room for the planned express lanes. A traffic diversion will be necessary during the construction of the bridges across Pitts and Kimball Bridge roads.

A collaboration with the cities of Sandy Springs and Alpharetta will also add "multi-use walkways" to the bridge structures that span the three roads.

"The new bridges will provide operational and local road improvements in advance of the major express lanes construction," explained GDOT Design-Build Project Manager Rick O'Hara.

The Ga. 400 express lanes/bridge-building project is expected to begin in early 2023, with a completion date of 2025, as predicted by GDOT. According to a press release from the agency in May, transportation officials are currently in the process of selecting a developer. They are hopeful that one will be selected in 2023 but acknowledged that the schedule is flexible.
