As we previously reported, the bill devotes about $705 million to state highway projects. 

However, we also reported that “the bill gives a $733 million one-time boost to transportation work.” That number has increased to $870 million in the new version of the legislation signed by Gov. Cox.

“I can’t think of a better way to spend the one-time money than on infrastructure,” said bill co-sponsor Rep. Mike Schultz (R-Hooper).

When the bill was first proposed, the dollar amount came to $2.26 billion, but Senate Republicans were unhappy that it included $1.4 billion in borrowed money through bonds, and so it was negotiated down to the current figure, with only $264 million in borrowed funds.

The bill also extends the timeline for the completion of several construction projects so that the state can fund the projects through the Transportation Investment Fund.

“The amount of things we’re going to be able to accomplish with this bill is pretty amazing,” Sen. Scott Sandall, (R-Tremonton), said. “We’re doing it with a very minimal amount of bonding that allows us to still tackle a number of projects.”

Language was added to the bill to push for Utah companies and residents to benefit from contracts on the infrastructure projects, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
