The Construction industry is the backbone of the US economy. Federal, state, and local governments are constantly funding new construction and improvement projects

Although governmental agencies are working toward a more inclusive contracting opportunity and promoting small and minority-owned businesses to participate, the lion’s share of the monies belongs to large construction companies.

Below we've compiled a list of the top 10 US Government Construction Firms.

Turner Construction

A subsidiary company of the German construction goliath, Hochtief, Turner Construction is the largest contractor for the federal government's construction projects. Offering design-build, project management, procurement, building information modeling, and a range of other construction services, the company has a total contract earning of $16.2 billion.

The company is headquartered in NYC and is known for popular American buildings like Madison Square Garden, Science and Engineering Complex at Harvard University, etc.

Bechtel Corporation

Founded in 1898, Bechtel has consistently ranked in the top 10 construction companies hired by the federal government. It has expertise in several industries, including sustainability, information technology, nuclear security, and defense. 

Bechtel, the Virginia-based construction and defense contractor, has completed over 25,000 projects globally, with the US government accounting for more than 90% of its defense contracts.

The US Army Contracting Command awarded Bechtel National a $759 million contract in June 2022 to assist in the shutdown of the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant.

Whiting-Turner ‘

Founded by Whiting and LeBaron Turner in 1909, Whiting-Turner is one of the fastest-growing construction management companies. The US Coast Guard awarded the company a $111 million contract to build a new waterfront for four national security cutters (NSCs) at Pier November. 

The company has recorded $10 billion in total contract earnings.

Kiewit Corporation

Kiewit is a Nebraska-based employee-owned engineering and construction firm. Kiewit has 17 subsidiaries in the United States and globally.

The company has been awarded contracts to construct buildings and barracks at Fort Lewis and other federal construction projects, such as the Friant-Kern Canal in California, the Santa Ana Freeway in Los Angeles, and the Thule Air Force Base in England.

The US Army Corps of Engineers awarded them a $310 million contract for the runway extension project at Elmendorf, Alaska.

DPR Construction

With total contract earnings of $9.8 billion, DPR is a leading construction engineering firm providing construction services for data centers, educational laboratories, acute care facilities, factories, etc. 

Fluor Corporation

Established in 1912 by John Simon Flour, Flour Corporation is an international engineering, construction, and procurement firm based in Texas. In September 2022, Fluor Corporation’s won a $4.5 billion contract with the Department of Energy for the clean-up efforts of the Savannah River nuclear power plant. 

They have total contract earnings of $8.8 billion.

Clark Construction

Previously known as Hyman Construction, Clark Construction was founded in 1906 before merging in 1996. It is a full-scale civil construction company based in Maryland. The company’s portfolio boasts several government infrastructure projects. 

They recorded a total earning of $6.7 billion.

Skanska USA

Founded in 1971, Skanska USA is consistently rated as one of the best federal government construction contractors. The business has access to the parent company Skanska AB’s broad experience in healthcare, education, data centers, aviation, and other fields. 

Skanska and RJ Industries' joint venture was awarded a $309 million contract for various construction activities at the Hunts Point Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility. 

Tutor Perini 

A comparatively new company founded in 2008, Tutor Perini is a leading civil, building, and specialty construction firm. With headquarters in Sylmar, California, the company provides diversified general contracting and design-build services worldwide. 

Currently, the firm boasts 20 fully-owned subsidiaries in the United States and worldwide, including Black Construction, Lunda Construction, Tutor Perini Building, and more. 

They have declared a total contract earning of $4.5 billion.

AECOM

With total contract earnings of over $4.4 billion, AECOM is an industry leader infrastructure consulting firm delivering professional services to the federal government and private agencies worldwide in 150 countries. 

Last year, AECOM was granted a $400 million contract by the US Navy.
