Did you know that the construction industry accounts for around 20% of worker deaths in the United States but comprises only 6% of the working force

Granite Construction is one company that is beating these odds. It's known across the construction industry for promoting a safe workplace and avoiding injuries and fatalities.

In recognition of this the Alaska Safety Advisory Council awarded Granite's Alaska Region team the Governor's Safety Award of Excellence for exemplary safety performance in 2022. Their safety and environmental performance have thus been thoroughly scrutinized over recent years.

"For the eighth time in the last 11 years, the Alaska Region [of Granite Construction] has received this award,” explained Granite SVP of Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ), Dave Hulverson. “It should also be noted that the team has achieved 300,000 recordable injury-free hours, which is a testament to the outstanding safety performance of Alaska Region employees.”

The Governor's Safety Award of Excellence is known for honoring companies that protect the environment, assets, and employees' health and safety while promoting superior corporate responsibility and maintaining industry standards.

Moreover, the Alaska Region finished the 2022 season with no OSHA recordable injuries. This achievement demonstrates the region's dedication to safeguarding its employees' safety and its safety policies' effectiveness.

But Granite’s good fortune in the state doesn’t end there.

The Alaska Department of Transportation (ADOT) recently awarded the company a $20 million contract to rehabilitate a 10-mile portion of Richardson Highway north of Glennallen. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will fund the project

This project's scope of work involves

  • restoring Richardson Highway from milepost 128 to 138
  • realignment at milepost 134
  • drainage advancements
  • intersection upgrades
  • construction of guardrail along the 10-mile stretch

This project complements an existing Granite project on the Richardson Highway from milepost 40 to 51, allowing Granite to complete this project by using a portable plant already in operation in the area to generate 30,000 tons of hot mix asphalt (HMA).

The project is set to commence in May and be completed by the end of this year.

"We are thrilled to expand and enhance our relationship with the Northern Region of Alaska DOT by undertaking another project on the Richardson Hwy,” said Granite VP of Regional Operations, Derek Betts.

“This provides a full season of work for our crews on this highway corridor in 2023. We are eager to make the most of our resources while delivering a high-quality product to the DOT and the surrounding communities."

Granite, which is in its centenary year of existence, is one of the US's largest diversified construction and construction materials companies. Granite is an industry leader in safety and an award-winning firm in quality and sustainability.

Some of the other brands from this company are Centennial Asphalt, Garco Testing Laboratories, Granite Construction Supply & Sign Shop, and Granite Industrial, Inc.
